9 days and running…

Another great workout today.  6 miles on the treadmill – tempo run.  2 miles easy (9:23 pace), 3 miles short tempo (7:47 pace), and 1 mile easy (9:2 pace) for a total of 6 miles.  I felt solid and while the 3 at short tempo were hard, I made it though them in good shape and finished the run strong.

I think the marathon is going to go just fine.

10 and swimming…

Any of you read my blog on occasion know that I have been using swimming as some solid cross-training this summer.  I haven’t been in the pool as much as I would have liked, and I have missed a lot of opportunities, but even so I feel it has really improved my overall fitness.

Today was a great workout.

In September, October, November, and December the group of Master swimmers that swim daily at lunch at the Downtown YMCA do a series of progressive 100′s.  In September (today) we did 25 x 100 on 1:30 – I had to use flippers for most of them to keep up, but I made all 25.  Next month (October) is 30 x 100, November brings 35 x 100 and December culminates with 40 x 100.

Today I was just happy to finish all 25, hopefully by next months set I’ll have a few more laps under my belt and able to complete the set without fins.  Or at least more without fins…

At any rate it was fun and I’m looking forward to more time in the water once the marathon is done.

11 days to go and a great workout…

I was actually able to get to the gym today over lunch! Wahooo! It felt so great to be back in the gym, running fast, and feeling tired, sore, and exhilarated all at the same time.  There is no feeling quite like it.

Anyhow, enough celebration.  Even though I haven’t been sticking tightly to the plan for last two or three weeks (work has been difficult), today I stuck with the plan and the plan called for a speed day – it was FUN!  Here are the details:

  • 10 minute warm up
  • 5 x 1K 4:24 pace on 1:45 Rest Interval
  • 10 minute cool down

Actuals:

  1. 4:05.98
  2. 4:14.38
  3. 4:21.55
  4. 4:17.07
  5. 4:09.43

Really, my workout today felt great and gave me a lot of confidence that I will be able to run the Marathon successfully – maybe not as fast as I was shooting for early in the season, but a finish is success in itself.

17 days to go…

Only two and a half weeks to the Twin Cities Marathon and I have a cold.  I’m really not feeling good today at all…

I went to the YMCA at lunch and got in a short run – 3 miles at about 8:30 pace.  It was harder than it should have been but I’ll attribute that to being a little under the weather.  I’m going to try and get out tonight after my fire department meeting for another 4.5 miles.  Here’s the loop I plan on running later:
