Today’s workout was real challenge for me. I knew going in that it was going to be hard, but I was determined to finish the whole thing.
Here it is, it’s pretty simple:
40 X 100 yards on 1:45
I did the first 10 on 1:30 and the last 30 on 1:45. I knew I couldn’t hold the 1:30 interval for all of them so I hung on as long as I could. My splits were pretty consistent, coming in between 1:20 and 1:30 for all 40. Around the 25th or 26th one I started getting cramps in my feet and calf. If you’ve ever swam, you know how much this sucks. I stretched a little and got them worked out, but it was still no fun for the last 10. The important part is that I made them all.
This is the longest, most strenuous swimming workout I’ve completed since high school. Since 1991! While I was swimming today I was thinking about that and it really made me proud – proud of all I have overcome this year, proud of the progress I have made in the last year and half, and mostly just thankful that I am still here and able to push myself. I am truly a lucky man.
What a great feeling.
By the way, the last day in December brings 50 X 100 yards. Something to look forward to!

I have this quote hanging by my desk. I read it almost every day and it helps to keep me motivated and productive. While it was said by Dick Jochums (Coach of the Santa Clara Swim Club) pertaining to sports, I think it is relevant to pretty much everything, everyday.
…those who strive, those who leave nothing on the table, those who will take the risk, will all be winners. Life is truly sweeter for those who truly live it. The world
belongs, and will always belong, to the people who participate. Those who stand on the outside, who never risk, who never fail, cannot now, nor will they ever, understand the beauty of each breath of life. So don’t feel sorry for those who fail, feel sorry for the majority that never participate. They’ll just never understand, let alone feel, all that life can and should be. –Dick Jochums

Here is an excerpt:
I’m quite sure that there are people out there who never feel unmotivated or unexcited to get out there and pound the pavement. I’m also quite sure that I’m not one of those people. Don’t get me wrong, I love to run. I love the feeling I get when I’m done and I’ve accomplished my goals. I even enjoy the run itself, I always feel great. But, I’ll admit, sometimes it’s hard to get out the door. When this happens, I reach into my motivation toolbox – a bunch of mental tricks—and grab something to help get
me motivated and running. Here are a few of my favorites…
You can the whole thing here.
Thanks!
