Family Vacation – Day 8 – 07/2/2006

Today was ‘go home’ day. All in all it has been a great, unforgettable, fun, exciting, relaxing, and rejuvenating week. I’m so glad that my kids got to spend so much time with their grandparents – I know from my own childhood that these are times and experiences that will shape and transform the rest of their lives.

Can’t wait to do it again!

Family Vacation – Day 7 – 07/1/2006

I was going to go on a run this morning, but due to Alex’s restless night – he was up at 11:30pm and then again at 2:00am – I was pretty tired and decided that it wasn’t going to happen this week.  Oh well, what are vacations for if not slacking, right?

On today’s agenda was a trip to the
Hill
Annex
Mine
State Park
which is located about a half an hour north of

Grand Rapids

.  I really wasn’t expecting too much, but was blown away by the mine (this is an open pit mine, not a deep, underground mine) and the scenery.  The bus tour ($9.00 per person) around the mine was great, the tour guide was very personable and informative, and it took up a good chunk of the morning.  While down-time on vacation is nice for adults, it leads to questionable kid behavior
and problems.  This kept us busy for a little while.

After the tour, we headed back to Ruttger’s for a lunch of leftovers and then spent the rest of the afternoon at the pool with Alex.  He is really starting to get to be a strong swimmer and seems to be getting more and more confident in the pool.  He loves the water and just cannot wait to get back to swimming lessons at the YMCA.

For our final dinner at the resort, we headed back to Jake’s – really the only option – and were treated to the best service and food of our trip.  Pretty much everyone at the table had Walleye and we were all really happy with our food.  A great way to end the stay!

Finally, we had another camp fire – albeit small and short lived (the rain last night made things difficult for fire-starter Bob) – and we rested some marshmallows and had smores.  Yummy. Nice. Fun. Memorable.

Till Tomorrow…

Family Vacation – Day 6 – 06/30/2006

Once again, no run today, I am a giant slacker. Ahhh, to be on vacation. I’ll pay for my sloth next week

Tom, Bob’s brother and Jen’s Uncle, came down from International Falls this morning to play golf with us. He is an excellent golfer, plays nearly every day, and put us all to shame with our constant hacking. It was a frustrating round, I almost gave up a couple of times, and, in general, it was not as much fun as our round earlier in the week.I’ll attribute that to being a little over tired, the heat (it was hot today), and ready to go home to my own bed.

Once again Jen, the Grandma’s, and the boys spent the morning/afternoon at the pool. They packed a lunch for some poolside dining and seemed to have had a nice afternoon. Alex continues to improve in the pool and David just wants to do anything his big brother does.

After golf and pool time, Jen and I ran into Grand Rapids for some internet connectivity and picked up KFC for dinner. I know, not the healthiest, but come-on, I’m on vacation! We got back to the resort around 5:30pm had dinner and then once again headed to the pool.

No fire tonight, seems like rain and storms moving in. We got the boys to bed early and Jen and I went to a movie – “The Lake House”. It was a little corny and totally unbelievable, but overall a good movie and entertaining. I liked it because it ended how it should have.

It was almost midnight when we got back and we headed to bed…

Till tomorrow…

Family Vacation – Day 5 – 06/29/2006

Took today off from running, too much to do! The weather has been great so far and we have kept very busy.

We spent the afternoon at the “Judy Garland Museum/Birthplace” in Grand Rapids. They also have a Children’s Museum attached, so the kids had fun – but, overall, I’d give it a 2 out of 5 stars. Not my cup of tea – I’m not a big Judy Garland/Wizard of Oz fan I guess. For Grand Rapids, that’s about all they have…

Once we were done there, we went to another local attraction – the old school – which is an old schoolhouse converted to retail shops. Again, I was not overly impressed. Oh well, it was still a good afternoon.

Lunch today: McDonald’s. Not my favorite, but the kids had fun at the play land.

More swimming and fun once we got back to Ruttger’s after lunch. Additionally Alex once again headed to the putting green to practice his newest trade – golf. Evidently he is the next Tiger Woods, he needs to get his own set of clubs now. Somehow, my son picked up the habit of needing the right equipment to practice whatever sport he may be into at the minute – he needs soccer gear and swimming gear and baseball gear and now he needs golf gear. Oh yeah, there’s a separate OUTFIT for each sport too…

Another evening, another fire. What a great week…

Till tomorrow…

Vacation 2006 (2) 006

Sunday – 07/09/2006

I’m really pleased with my running progress lately.  My mileage is ramping up and I’m even a little bit ahead of where I need to be.  You can see my training log at:

http://www.weendure.com/user/AEngelsrud

On Sunday I did 14 mile (my longest run to date) in a little over 2 hours.  I’m not too speedy yet, but I figure as I improve my training techniques and my conditioning, that’ll come as well.  The run was beautiful.  I was up and out the door before 6:00am and the morning sun and air was warm and refreshing.  I ran a totally new route and had to back track a couple of time, so that was a little frusterating, but it was still a great morning.

Additionally,  I’m reading a couple of different books on training and nutrition right now and hopefully will find some improvements there.  This is what I am reading right now:

Runner’s World Performance Nutrition for Runners : How to Fuel Your Body for Stronger Workouts, Faster Recovery, and Your Best Race Times Ever

Runner’s World The Cutting-Edge Runner : How to Use the Latest Science and Technology to Run Longer, Stronger, and Faster (Runners World)

(Thanks to Alex and Ecto for the cool Amazon tool)

Have a great day!
