Update

Now that I am done with my third and FINAL surgery, I can move on to bigger and better things. You will see in the coming months that I will be using this blog for a variety of topics. One thing I have found I enjoy is finding interesting topics from other news sources, blogs, magazines, or anywhere else and writing about them. You’ve seen this a little in the past week or so, and I hope to continue with one or two posts a week in that fashion.

Another thing I will continue to blog is my health status. I’ve had lots of interesting things happen to me in the last year and I find that this is a good place to talk about the pain and frustration associated with all of these issues. Every time I feel like I’m getting in good shape, I hit another roadblock. Anyhow, I’m sure there will be more updates about this.

Finally, as I’ve said in previous posts – I want to run the Twin Cities Marathon on October 1, 2006. With my recent health issues, my busy schedule, my wife’s less than excited attitude, and my 3 kids, I figure I have loads to write about. So, I will post my progress here – I will start with my rehabilitation after hernia surgery, move on to early training progress, long Sunday morning runs, and end with a celebratory post along with my marathon finish picture. Hopefully.

Oh yeah, keep in mind that I update my weight stats daily. Take a look and comment if you see anything interesting!

I’m working on a couple of interesting ‘news’ type posts for later…

I’m BACK!

Once again, I have successfully navigated the surgery highway.  This time it was just to fix a minor incisional hernia in my abdomen.  I went in Tuesday morning and was discharged on Wednesday afternoon.  So far I’m feeling really good, but really sore.  It feels like I just did about 5,000 crunches.  Lat night, I started laughing at a TV show and literally thought I was going to die.  I felt like I was splitting in half.  Ouch!

Anyhow, I’ll be posting more now and finding new and interesting things to talk about.

Single sex workouts?

Interesting…

Muslim Women want Single Sex Workouts

If these women were promised separate workout times when they signed up for the gym, then by all means, they should have the service they were promised.  If not, I say gyms are pretty much universally co-ed.  Get used to it, get comfortable with it, or buy a treadmill for the living room…

Wierd… but cool?

vibram fivefingersI recently read a blog post about these new ‘shoes’ going on the market by Vibram.  You can find details on them here: Vibram
FiveFingers
.  These are perhaps the oddest thing I have ever seen in footwear and yet, I am oddly intrigued by them,

First of all, I just can’t help but look.   It’s like a bad accident, you want to just keep on driving, but you have to look.  They are just so… odd. Second, I find myself wondering what they feel like.  Does it really feel like running barefoot? Last, I can’t help but think that people would stare.  Good or bad, I’m not sure – depends on what you are looking for.  These are little ‘out there’…

For the record, Vibram makes the best soles out there.  Every pair of hiking boots I have had have had Vibram soles.  They last forever, have great traction, and come on most of the quality footwear out there.

I’d love to give these a try – just to see what they look like on my feet!  (If you are from Vibram and want to send me a pair, I’d be glad to post a review here.  I wear a 10 and a half.)

Meditiation & Music and Surgery Recovery

A recent article on WebMD titled “Music may Help Soothe Surgery Pain”  caught my attention tonight.  Although brief, the article references a study that  may show a link between music and lower pain levels after surgery.

With a surgery coming up in just a couple of days, this is really interesting to me.  I was planning on bringing my Creative Micro anyhow, but now I have a reason to bring it. I’m going to do whatever my Doctor tells me to do, but anything that can help me with a speedy recovery is welcome news to me.

Any thoughts?

On another different, yet similar note, I found this on meditation and health.  This post briefly outlines what most of us all ready know, meditation makes you feel better.  But, and perhaps more importantly, it actually provides measurable improvements in some patients.

I can really see a link between music, meditation, and healing.  I can’t help but believe that the combination of music and meditation after surgery would help in healing – perhaps reducing pain, perhaps speeding healing.  Who knows?  I know that many times music calms me, makes me feel better, and improves my clarity.

I guess I need to learn how to meditate
